I wish to know how to pronounce the word "aari" itself —Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.174.86.54 (talk) 13:41, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Removal

[edit]

I removed the whole section about phonology, because it was an unsourced joke written in a terrible style:

  • "Vowels in Aari are generally pronounced with a murmured quality" - vague wording aside, the cited paper contains no description of any "murmured quality".
  • "so basically when pronouncing vowels one exhales slightly dramatically to achieve the correct sound" - I have no idea what this is supposed to mean. How do you "exhale slightly dramatically"?
  • "Some vowels are not pronounced with a breathy quality; one way to guarantee that a word is pronounced in such a way is if the word contains the letter h." - so, the whole word is pronounced in a breathy way, or single vowels, or what?
  • "The letter h is not used often in the language and may be disappearing from it, but the breathy phonation is still pronounced for most vowels" - do you mean the sound /h/? Orthographic letters don't suddenly disappear from languages.
  • "When reading Aari in the Latin script, vowels are generally breathy if there is an accent or some kind of indicator above the letter." - again, no idea what this means. There's no accents or "some kind of indicators" in the vocabulary list of the cited paper. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 188.147.35.152 (talk) 13:37, 23 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I faking gave extensive reasoning on why I deleted a whole unsourced ridiculous section written in a terrible style but no you reverse my changes fine have a page saying "to exhale slightly dramatically" then even though no one knows what the fak it's supposed to mean — Preceding unsigned comment added by 188.147.35.152 (talk) 14:15, 23 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

188.147.35.152 is entirely right in his criticism of the paragraph that he deleted. Not only is it badly written, mixing up phonological facts with orthographic representation, it is also not supported by the only source cited, which makes no mention at all of vowel quality or breathiness, as it is concerned with consonant correspondences in South Omotic languages. I therefore concur that, as it stands, the paragraph represents original research, and is badly written. If indeed Aari has breathy vowels (which may well be the case) a reliable source needs to be cited in support of any such statement according to Wikipedia standards. For now I will remove the paragraph, and I ask AU not to reinsert this information unless it is better written and supported by at least one good source actually making the claim reported in the paragraph. Oh Landroving Linguist, sorry. I patrol "recent changes" for vandalism, and the removal of the content did not initially seem like a good faith edit. I think you're right now. Still, the user was being rude and cursing at me, I don't think that's right. He has also done this on Talk:Vowel length. To quote his talk page: "Please stop attacking other editors, as you did on Talk:Vowel length. If you continue, you may be blocked from editing. Comment on content, not on other contributors or people. Nardog (talk) 17:29, 23 October 2018 (UTC)" Anonymuss User (talk) 14:04, 26 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with you on the editor's language, but that is beside the point in this matter. I still understand (and it happened to me before) that you get stricter than necessary with someone who has rubbed you the wrong way. Landroving Linguist (talk) 12:31, 27 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Native Speakers

[edit]

The number of native speakers should be updated to "285,000" as according to Ethnologue: https://www.ethnologue.com/language/aiw. However I'm not sure how to do this correctly. — Preceding unsigned comment added by CcfUk2018 (talk
